Our Craft

Over 30 Years Of Perfecting Our Craft

At Classic Design we specialise in traditional cornice reproduction, using time-honoured techniques to recreate original mouldings. One of the core methods we use is bench running, where the cornice profile is hand-formed using a custom-made template.

Bench running is the process of shaping plaster cornice by hand on a flat surface (bench), using a metal profile template called a "running mould." This allows us to produce straight lengths of cornice that match original profiles with absolute precision.

  1. Template Creation – We take a profile from the original cornice, either on-site or from a moulding sample.
  2. Reproducing Enrichments – Enrichments refers to the decorative elements applied to the plain run cornice profile. A silicone mould is created and fine casting plaster is poured to reproduce new casts ready to be hand fitted on site.
  3. Running the Cornice – Fine casting plaster are poured and the running mould is passed until the full profile is formed with hessian scrim and timber laths added for strength.
  4. New cornice installation – Our experienced team ensure a quality installation with your existing original mouldings.
